Only prob I have is with the board quality, it is clearly cheap material and is folded up 4 square style. The old Monopoly boards were much better, and considering its an anniversary edition I expected better. The pieces are quality as well as the cash and cards though. It’ll do.

I’m a little sarcastic, sometimes. This is an actual Monopoly game, but they have pieces from eight different decades, wood houses and hotels, and a retro look. If you enjoy collecting games, this is a good one to buy

    BACKGROUND and ORIGINS

I have seen so many versions of Monopoly show up in the stores, I have to think hard before I order a game, and though I’ve purchased this one, I haven’t played it yet. I guess they have to keep coming out with new versions or their copyrights would expire. (Yes, the copyrights probably expired on the oldest games, which is why you see games like WORLDOPOLY published by other people and sold for much less.)

This is the 80th Anniversary version. It contains examples of things that appeared in each of these eight decades. But what if we went back one extra decade? Monopoly was not invented by Hasbro, but by an individual who was actually living in Atlantic City at the time. If you never heard this, be sure to search the Internet for the “origin story.”

HOW DO I FEEL ABOUT THIS VERSION

I like the fact that we have playing pieces from each decade. The game does have a nice “retro” look to it, but I’m disappointed that the houses and hotels are all a boring drab color wood. In the original game, the houses were green and the hotels were red, and they were all made of wood.

    THE ORIGINAL GAME

If I had known that they would soon be coming out with a copy of the very first version, I might have skipped buying this one, but that’s because the original game is one that I was able to play with while I was growing up. My mother got it, brand new, when she was 13 years old.

    CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

In any case, this game can be a lot of fun, if you don’t already have one. Even if you don’t play it very often, it is a wonderful look at the past, present and future of Monopoly.

Do you need it? Not necessarily, but it’s fun to have.

I recommend this game to you, or the original game reproduction, if you prefer.

THIS NEXT PARAGRAPH WAS IN MY ORIGINAL REVIEW

I wish they would re-issue the game that my mother bought. She had one of the original games. The board was folded in half like the board in this box is, but the boards were in a separate box. She bought a small box (about half the size of this box) that contained everything BUT the board, then also picked up the board when she went to check out.

What do you know, they did reissue the original game, as I comment on in several places above. But it is not an exact reproduction. The original game came with a small box that did not include the playing board. You had to grab the board from the box that was sitting nearby. I fondly remember my mother telling her of this process. See the picture. My sister threw it out rather than let me inherit it as I’d been promised, so someday, I’ll buy one on eBay.

This is honestly one of the best purchases I have made on Amazon, and that is saying a lot since I have made over 170 purchases in the last six months. The price was very very good. The quality is unquestionable. My family has spent hours playing this together, which is a miracle as it is almost impossible to get them all to sit down and do something together for any decent period of time. This is also one of the few games that allows enough players to accommodate the whole family (I have six kids). I also want to note the quality is superior to the standard Monopoly games. The houses and hotels are made from wood and the pawns (? the parts you move around the board) have a very solid, hefty feel to them. You can definitely tell the difference between this version and today’s standard version and I enjoy things of a finer quality. Overall I think this is worth every penny. I would have paid twice as much and still be satisfied.
